I want to first thank all our committee members and chairs for your continued support of the Association and the industry. I would also like to welcome our new Committee Chairs for the Southern Market Region and the Western Market region. We are excited about this upcoming year, which has already started off strong!
I will provide a brief overview of 2015 as it was a spectacular year for our market committees. Combined, we reached out to over 1000 participants in the municipal, engineering, and contractor sectors through conference participation and CRMCA seminars. This is over a 300% increase in exposure compared to the 360 we reached in 2014. Way to go everyone!
In 2016, the market committees’ main foci will continue to be education of specific topics based on the regional needs, continuing to educate and utilize the pre-construction checklist, Flatwork Finishing and continuing to sending the message that CRMCA is available as a resource and the unity of the industry.
The following summaries are for each region on the 1st quarter of 2016 and what is planned for the 2nd Quarter.
Southern Market (Colorado Springs to NM Border)
Chair – Mac Shafer, Transit Mix Concrete
Co-Chair – Ken Bontrager, CEMEX
The Southern Market Committee would like to welcome the 2016 Chairman, Mac Shafer with Transit Mix. The group met in early first quarter and reviewed 2015 feedback from the region. During the 2nd quarter, they will be finalizing their 2016 schedule and will be assisting with the administration of the ACI Strength Testing Technician Certification on April 13th that will be held at Transit Mix.
The next meeting will be in Colorado Springs on April 21st at a TBD location.
Western Market Committee (Western Slope Wyoming to New Mexico Border)

The Western Market was extremely busy during December and the first quarter of 2016. In December, they held a Test Fest with 18 participating testing labs (view results and additional information). In January, they held the highly demanded seminar, “Day at the Concrete Jobsite” that had a record attendance of 78 individuals (view presentations). Finishing up in March, they held another offering of the “Day at the Concrete Jobsite” in Durango, CO that had 43 individuals attend (view presentations). Way to go team!
In addition to the committee members and the speakers, we would like to
thank the following sponsors that helped make this happen: Elam Construction, Four Corners Materials, Holcim (US), Inc., Oldcastle Materials, United Companies, Whitewater Materials.
We would also like to thank the following presenters for both seminars: Mike Adcock, Adcock Concrete; Paul Appel, 4 Corners Materials; Robbie Lewis, Elam Construction; Tom Pelo, BASF; Frank Kozeliski, Independent Consultant; Bud Werner, CTL Thompson
During the 2nd quarter, the group will be very busy planning and attending the APWA Spring Fest Conference from April 20th – April 22nd. During the conference, they will be doing a live demonstration of a fast track project and Tom Pelo, BASF, will be following up with a presentation. In addition to the conference, we will be holding 5 ACI certification sessions in the western region that will include sessions in Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs. It is going to be busy 2nd quarter for this group.
The next meeting will be in Grand Junction on April 19th at 2pm at the Clarion Inn.
Central Market Region (Castle Rock to Wyoming Border)
Chair – Dana Rotkovich, Bestway Concrete
Co-Chair – Kirk Johnson, Mountain Cement
During the first quarter, the Central Market Committee has been planning for upcoming seminar, Modern Flatwork Finishing – Exterior Concrete that will be held on May 12th at the Pinehurst Country Club. In addition to planning for this seminar, the group has also been working on developing an “Exterior Concrete – Flatwork Finisher Installation Guide” that will soon be going to the Technical Committee for Review.
The group is soliciting the membership’s help on collecting videos that will not only be used for the May 12th Seminar but can be available for other educational events. Use this link to view a document which shows what the group is looking for, has and still needs.
The next meeting will be in Centennial, at the CRMCA Offices on April 14th.
Thank you again to our members for their commitment, time, and support of the association and the industry. The year has started off strong with many things taking place around the state.
