2015 Third Quarter Concrete Market Committee Blog

Wow!  What an exciting first half of 2015!  We continue to educate multiple market segments by presenting to over 550 individuals who attended our seminars and presentations statewide during the first half of the year! In addition to our seminars, we had administered certification exams to over 575 examinees.  We continue to stay focused and promoting concrete through educating not only within our membership but with collaborating and working with other industry associations and the first half of the year has shown the success and outreach we have accomplished.

The Western Market has been extremely busy traveling over the whole slope during the 2nd quarter.  In April, the group was in Durango, CO to administer the ACI Field 1 and have a meeting with the Southwestern group.  The group began planning for events in the area later in the year.

Western Slope - APWA Demo

Demo at the April 2015 APWA Conference in Grand Junction

During the APWA Spring Fest Conference in Grand Junction, we had a booth and I presented in front of 32 individuals on the CRMCA, an overview of certifications and the importance of proper testing procedures.  The next day, the group had successfully executed a live demonstration and Tom Pelo, BASF, did brief presentation on “Slump vs Water:  Friend or Foe” to 53 individuals from municipalities and industry participants.  The demonstration included information some of the new and refined technologies such as the use of pozzolans, water reducers, and evenly graded combined aggregate gradations to minimize water demand while maintaining specified water to cement ratios.

In May, the group had spent two days in Grand Junction with great attendance for ACI Field Testing, ACI Strength Testing and ACI Flatwork Technician/Finishing certification sessions.

Central Martin Martin Lunch and Learn

April 2015 lunch and learn at Martin/Martin Engineering

From the March lunch and learn, the group had another opportunity to do another lunch and learn to the Martin/Martin Consulting Engineers staff in April.  Kevin Kane presented more in-depth with the importance of testing by going into more specifics with Test Fest results and the pre-construction checklist.  The group has asked us to do several other topics for their staff to continue furthering their education.  We look forward to the continued exposure this brings to the ready mixed concrete industry and further educating the engineers.

The May 5th CSI:  Colorado Concrete Construction Inspector Seminar, presented by Tom Pieters, City of Aurora, had a great attendance of over 90 individuals.  The seminar was aimed to provide a stronger understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the inspector, discussing critical components or elements of a successful project and following up with an overview and the importance of having a pre-construction meeting and the availability of the CRMCA TC-01 Pre-construction checklist.

The main focus for the group during the 3rd quarter is planning for the next seminar in October on Cure and Seals in addition to continue to collect data and strategize to address the challenges the home builders and contractors have faced with concrete. The goal of the group is to have something in place by end of 2015 so stay tuned.

In addition to the committee seminars, CRMCA had collaborated with ACPA, NRMCA, PCA, and Rocky Mountain ACI to hold a seminar on Concrete Overlays at the Pinehurst Country Club that was to educate suppliers and their customers, general contractors, and various industry professionals on resurfacing old parking lots with concrete overlays.  The seminar had over 60 individuals who attended and was well received.  In addition to the general education and process of concrete overlays, the audience had a great opportunity to hear directly from the Pinehurst Country Club Board of Directors as to why they chose concrete overlays in place of other options.

Thank you again to our members for their commitment, time, and support to the association and the industry.  While we won’t have many events, meetings, and seminars in the first half of the 3rd quarter, we will be busy planning.  We had a great 2nd quarter and I am looking forward to the 3rd quarter!
